What to Consider Between your Wedding Dress and Jewellery

It feels like there are a million tiny details to decide on when planning your wedding—catering companies, colour schemes, flowers, and invitations are just the beginning. In addition to coordinating the event, you also have to make personal style choices to ensure that you look great and feel confident on your big day. One important component that you may not have considered is matching your jewellery to your wedding dress.

You probably already have a gorgeous engagement ring and will be adding a band on your wedding day, but many brides also choose other pieces of jewellery to complement their gown. If you haven’t even thought about what accessories to pair with your wedding dress, or if you’re just feeling lost when it comes to styling yourself for this special occasion, consider some of the suggestions below.

Metals

You have a few different choices when it comes to picking out metals for your wedding jewellery. If you’re wearing a pure white gown, the most flattering options are platinum or white gold. Try to steer away from yellow gold if you’re wearing a bright white dress, as these hues tend to clash. If you’re wearing an off-white or ivory dress, however, yellow gold can help to give you a warm look.

Taking a non-traditional route and wearing a colourful dress? Any white coloured metal is generally a safe bet because it will be a metal that looks good with just about any colour.

Necklaces

The most important thing to take into consideration when you’re choosing a necklace is what the neckline of your wedding dress looks like.

For a sweetheart neckline, try a necklace that reflects the curve of the bodice, such as a princess necklace with a delicate pendant.

Strapless dresses look good with most necklace types because you have more of a “blank canvas” effect, and you may want to choose a statement piece like a pearl necklace, a multi-strand necklace or a diamond-studded bib. Necklaces that sit right at the collar bone are a great way to accentuate your clavicle.

If you’re wearing a high neckline, an opera necklace (one long, single strand) creates a look that manages to be dramatic and delicate at the same time.

With a V-neckline, you’ll want to choose a necklace that follows the shape of the dress but doesn’t fall too low. Pendant necklaces are often a nice touch.

If you’re wearing a one-shoulder dress or another type of dress with an unusual neckline, you may want to skip the necklace altogether and opt for an ornate pair of earrings instead.

Earrings

The trick to choosing the right earrings is to have them be the inverse of your necklace. That means that if you choose a simple necklace or no necklace at all, you might want to choose earrings that make a statement, while you may want to pair simpler earrings with a more elaborate necklace. When in doubt, diamond studs or pearl drops are always a beautiful choice.  Often here the simpler the better…

Match your Jewellery to your Personality

There are plenty of style tips and tricks that you can follow, but ultimately, you should choose the jewellery that makes you feel the best on your special day—and that shows who you really are.

Love everything vintage? Don’t be afraid to choose vintage or art deco-inspired jewellery, even if your dress is more of a modern design. In fact, sometimes the contrast between vintage and modern can be striking in the best possible way.

Love colour? Just because your dress is white doesn’t mean you have to stay away from coloured gemstones. A ruby or emerald pendant might be just the thing to truly make your wedding look vibrant, or the softer hues of pink diamonds or aquamarine can add a subtle, romantic touch.

If you have a piece of heirloom jewellery that you’d like to incorporate on your wedding day, then by all means, do. You can even have a bespoke jeweller update it or customize it to make sure that it looks great with your dress.

Final Thoughts

When choosing wedding jewellery, select pieces that are flattering and complementary to your dress, but not too extravagant. Remember, this is your special day, and your jewellery is meant to enhance you, not overshadow you.

If you’d like to learn more about wedding jewellery, or about how to have designer jewellery created for this momentous occasion, consider working with a custom jeweller. This way, you can make sure that your jewellery is unique and truly reflects you.
